Dragged Nail Art

Lately, I’ve been getting into nails whether it is painting plain colours or adding that extra flair with brush techniques.

I’ve always been curious about playing with nail colours and since meeting and shooting with Jess for her page @BoysInPolish on Instagram, I’ve had the confidence to go buy my own polishes and experiment myself. Having a preference for longer nails gives me more real estate to play around with patterns and colours to come up with new combinations. Watching a lot of Cristine at SimplyNailogical gave inspiration and curiousness too.

This brush effect came by a complete accident and I’ve not stopped using it since as it’s a simple but effective way of adding interest to your nails.

Equipment
  • Jojoba oil
  • Basecoat
  • Base colour
  • Brushed colour
  • Topcoat
Technique
  1. Rub a tiny amount of jojoba oil onto your nails and the surrounding skin. This acts as a protective barrier
  2. Once nails are dried, brush on your base coat.
  3. Brush on your of your base colour taking care to not leave brush strokes
  4. With your chosen colour, dip the brush applicator into the polish and then drag the brush against the neck of the bottle on both sides to wipe off as much excess as much as possible till it is almost dry. Lightly drag the brush across your nail. There will be an initial colour pay off and then fade off
  5. Once you’re happy with the design, add on your topcoat and allow to dry completely
Tips and optional extras
  • When dipping your brush into your colour, wipe any excess off one side of the brush against the neck of the bottle to prevent flooding on your nails
  • If you’re having trouble with the colour pay off with your polish be it too sheer or too light of a colour, add a layer of white before the colour to help it stand out
  • A darker contrasting colour works best but experiment and see what you like
  • For a finish that is a little bit extra, add on a layer of clear sparkle before your final topcoat
  • Have fun with it and play around with different combinations and brush pressure
